wycherley: Joseph-Benoît Suvée (1743-1807), Dibutades; or, the Origin of Drawing (detail), 1791 According to legend, Dibutades was a young woman whose fiancé was about to leave on a long voyage, so in order to retain a memento of him she traced the outline of his silhouette on the wall—thereby inventing the art of drawing. […] Suvée must have been familiar with an engraving of a painting by Scottish artist David Allan done in Rome in 1733, since the composition of his own canvas is highly similar. However, Suvée’s range of colors and his forms extend the approach explored by Wright of Derby. Suvée offers a radical interpretation of the allusion to the art of Antiquity. By plunging his ancient models into the darkness of a tiny, flickering flame, he creates a poetry of caressing shadows and twinned figures, reflecting an inner world haunted by absence versus the permanence of memory.
